Choosing the Right Summer Footwear for Every Occasion

While it may be tempting to wear flip-flops everywhere, not all summer shoes are created equal when it comes to keeping your feet airy and protected. To us at Goldsmith Podiatry, making smart footwear choices for specific summer situations is key to avoiding discomfort, pain, and common seasonal foot problems. Let's explore what to avoid and what to opt for to keep your feet happy all summer long.

The Beach

Flip flops and slides are often the go-to, of course. However, avoiding flimsy flip-flops for prolonged walking is ideal. Their flat, thin soles force the plantar fascia and foot muscles to overwork, which can lead to heel pain like plantar fasciitis.

So, if you’re walking elsewhere, opt for flip-flops with arch support, a cushioned sole, and a secure strap (like a Croc). These provide necessary stability and shock absorption and make boardwalk strolls genuinely comfortable.

Another great option? Pack a pair of shoes in your bag and slip them on after you leave the sand.

The Amusement Park

Amusement parks involve miles of walking, long lines, and sudden stops. This is definitely a situation where avoiding sandals without ankle support, high heels, or brand-new shoes is important.

Heels will lead to forefoot pain and instability, sandals offer no protection from crowds or accidental bumps, and new shoes are a recipe for blisters. Instead, opt for well-broken-in athletic shoes or comfortable walking sneakers that offer excellent cushioning, arch support, and ankle stability (your feet will thank you later!).

The Backyard BBQ

Summer gatherings are relaxed, but your footwear shouldn't be careless. While it’s tempting to go barefoot, the ticks and uneven ground say otherwise. Hidden roots, stray toys, or even sharp debris can lead to cuts, splinters, or ankle twists.

Again, sneakers are golden here, especially to avoid infections or serious injuries. This will especially protect your children from unseen hazards while they are running around.

The Pool

Avoid walking barefoot in public locker rooms, around pools, or shared showers. These damp, warm environments are prime opportunities for fungi that cause athlete's foot and warts. Instead, opt for water shoes, flip-flops, or sandals with a good grip. These protect your feet from infection-causing microbes and provide much-needed traction on slippery surfaces, preventing falls.

The Trail

Hiking can lead to dangerous slips, ankle sprains, or even fractures on uneven terrain, so any aforementioned footwear recommendation is a no-go.

The only acceptable option here is a hiking shoe or boot. Look for a rigid sole that protects against sharp rocks and deep, multi-directional lugs on the outsole for superior traction on dirt, gravel, and roots.
