Love Those Feet!

At Goldsmith Podiatry, we look forward to August because we celebrate National “I Love My Feet” Day.

Below are some facts about feet that our Manhattan patients will enjoy:

  • The human foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and tendons.

  • The average person walks about 115,000 miles in a lifetime. That’s the equivalent of circling the globe over 4 times!

  • Fingernails and toenails grow faster during hot weather, pregnancy, and teenage years.

  • Feet are spreading to support extra weight as our populations pack on the pounds. According to a 2014 study by the College of Podiatry in the UK, the average foot has increased two sizes since the 1970s.

  • The average woman walks 3 miles more daily than the average male.

  • During the first year of a child’s life, their feet grow rapidly, reaching almost half their adult size.

  • It takes at least 5-6 months to grow an entirely new toenail.

  • 9 out of 10 women wear shoes too small for their feet.

  • The pressure on the feet when running can be as much as four times the runner’s body weight.

  • Sweat glands in the feet produce approximately half a pint of sweat daily.

Take Care of Your Feet

Now that you know even more how special feet are, be proactive in caring for them. Here are a few tips:

  • Inspect your feet regularly for changes and unusual symptoms.

  • Keep feet clean and dry.

  • Wear shoes with good arch support and avoid narrow toe boxes and heels over two inches high.

  • Get your feet measured professionally periodically and buy shoes that fit properly.

  • Maintain a healthy weight regularly and don’t smoke. This will help reduce your risk of conditions such as peripheral arterial disease and diabetes, which adversely affect your feet.

If you are experiencing any pain or have other concerns about your feet, don’t wait. Make an appointment at our Upper West Side office by calling 212-877-1002 and let one of our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith, Dr. Rosanna Troia, and Dr. Kristina Ruff, diagnose and treat any foot problems that are present.
