7 Tips for Smart Back-to-School Shoe Shopping
Who doesn't want to be at the head of the class when getting footwear for your child this fall? At Goldsmith Podiatry, we know that one of the best ways to protect the health of your child's feet is by getting them quality shoes that fit properly.
Below is a cheat sheet to make shoe shopping a breeze:
Don't sacrifice function for a fad
Shoe styles come and go, but healthy feet last a lifetime. Don't agree with shoe styles that are completely flat or made out of materials like plastic or vinyl that don't allow feet to breathe. Compromise is key--let your child pick whatever funky pattern or bold color they like if the shoe’s design is good.
Consult the foot doctor
Contact our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith, Dr. Rosanna Troia, and Dr. Kristina Ruff, for an evaluation if your child suffers from a chronic condition such as recurring ingrown toenails or Sever's disease. The podiatrist may have recommendations to prevent further problems. You can make an appointment at our Upper West Side office by calling 212-877-1002.
Time your shopping trip
Shoes swell as the day goes on. Shopping late in the afternoon or at night helps reduce the chances of your child's new shoes feeling tight by the end of the school day.
Do your homework
If you have a young athlete, find out from the coach if special sports shoes are recommended. Different sports and different surfaces may necessitate a specific type of shoe.
Be savvy about socks
Have your child bring or wear the socks they will be wearing with the shoes you plan to purchase to get an accurate fit. Socks can play a big role in shoe comfort. Avoid ones that have heavy stitching on the toes. Materials that draw moisture away from the skin will reduce the risk of athlete's foot and other fungal infections.
Don't rush
If possible, get both your child's feet measured. Then, allow plenty of time to try shoes on and walk around in them for several minutes to make sure they feel comfortable and don't rub anywhere on the foot.
Make it a fun outing!
End with dinner out, ice cream, or a round of mini golf, and celebrate by checking a key item off your back-to-school to-do list.
