Beach Bag Essentials that Can Save Your Feet

At Goldsmith Podiatry, we know many of our Manhattan patients will be looking to cool off this summer on one of the many nearby beaches. Adding a few small items to your beach bag can help you avoid surf and sun hazards that could spoil your beach day. Here’s what to pack:

Sunscreen—okay, so chances are this is already in your beach bag but consider this a reminder to use it on the tops and bottoms of your feet as well as the rest of your body. The skin on your feet is just as vulnerable to sun damage, and at the beach, you get a double hit of rays directly from the sun and the reflection off the sand. Remember to reapply after swimming and every two hours if you’re not going in the water.

Water bottle—you may not realize it but staying hydrated can help you avoid painful swelling in your feet and ankles. It may seem counterintuitive but drinking lots of water actually helps your body flush out fluids that tend to accumulate in greater amounts on hot days.

Footwear—flip-flops or shower shoes are necessary to prevent burns to the bottom of your feet from hot sand, and cuts or puncture wounds from sharp objects hidden below the surface of the sand. Put them on before heading to the restroom too to avoid picking up a fungal infection off the floor. If there’s a possibility of a frisbee or volleyball game or other physical activity, be sure to have a pair of sneakers with you as well. Trying to get by with flip-flops will end in an ankle sprain or other injury in all likelihood.

Meat tenderizer—this one might puzzle you, but you’ll be glad you have it if you get a jellyfish sting. Vinegar and baking soda are also effective in reducing swelling and relieving the pain from a sting.

Mini first aid kit—if despite your best efforts to protect your feet you end up with a minor cut or scrape clean out the wound, apply antibiotic ointment and cover with a bandage.

If you suffer an injury or notice any signs of a foot infection after a day at the beach, make an appointment at our Upper West Side office by calling 212-877-1002. Our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith, Dr. Rosanna Troia, and Dr. Kristina Ruff will examine your feet and prescribe any necessary treatment.
