Planning a Last-Minute Getaway? What to Pack for Your Feet?

At Goldsmith Podiatry, we’ve heard a lot of complaints from our Manhattan patients about how we just can’t seem to escape winter’s clutches. One day it’s 55 and sunny, the next it’s 14 and snowing! It’s not surprising to hear about people taking advantage of lifting COVID restrictions and travel bargains to get away for a sneak peek at summer. If you’re jetting off for a break to a warm-weather destination, remember these tips for keeping feet healthy on your vacation.

  • Wear and pack socks. Sounds odd when you can’t wait to get your feet out into the fresh air, but the first place you’ll need them is at the airport. When you go through security, you’ll be asked to remove your shoes. If your feet are bare, you may be exposing yourself to fungal infections, which are transmitted by direct contact. Once you arrive at your destination, socks will protect your feet if you plan to do any hiking, play tennis, or enjoy other activities that require sneakers.

  • Don’t leave home without your orthotic. Taking a vacation from a custom orthotic our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith, Dr. Rosanna Troia and Dr. Kristina Ruff have prescribed, could leave you in podiatric pain that will definitely dampen the enjoyment of your getaway.

  • Blister protection. It’s been a while since your bare feet were in sandals. Foot size can change, and you may find there’s some friction between your feet and your summer footwear. Sweat can increase the rubbing and the likelihood of a blister forming. Pack some moleskin in your purse and apply to any spot on your foot that starts to feel sore to prevent a blister.

  • Sunscreen is a must! Just as during the summer months at home, the skin on your feet requires protection from the sun’s UV rays, which will be much stronger in a tropical location. Choose a broad-spectrum type that protects against both UVA and UVB rays that is water-resistant. Don’t forget to apply not only on beach and pool days but also when your feet will be exposed for long periods like a day of shopping or touring.

  • Mini foot care kit. It won’t take up much space in your bag, but a few foot care essentials can save the day. Pack toenail clippers and an emery board for any unexpected snags, as well as some bandages and anti-bacterial ointment for any minor cuts.
