Staying Fit Indoors

The Coronavirus has many of our Manhattan families staying home and away from crowds, and at Goldsmith Podiatry, we think that’s best. But we also know that being cooped up at home with work, school, or other usual distractions can be stressful for everyone. One great way to combat stress (and keep your feet and body healthy) is to exercise. How to go about it if you’re stuck inside? See our tips below.

Start safe

Just as you would with spring sports or an outdoor fitness regimen, follow a few simple precautions. Wear shoes that are appropriate for your activity and that fit properly. Follow all of our podiatrists’, Dr. Howard Goldsmith or Dr. Rosanna Troia, instructions if you have a chronic foot problem, such as flat feet or Achilles tendonitis. Start any new routine slowly and gradually build up duration and intensity.

Set a goal

Making time daily for fun fitness activities is a good idea. Decide if it will be the same time every day and how long you’ll work out together. Let each family member choose personal goals (being able to do 10 pull-ups or hold a plank for one minute) and gradually work towards them. Make a chart to show progress and celebrate together when someone reaches a goal.

Be sport-specific

If one of your children has a passion for a particular sport, find exercise and conditioning plans geared specifically for that activity and see how you can modify to do indoors. Look up what some of their favorite players do to stay in shape.

Get creative

Make use of the television for fitness shows and videos (get out those old dance party videos/DVDs). Make an exercise circuit in your home or apartment. Spread stations out over several rooms if necessary.

Listen to your feet

As always, encourage family members to pay attention to their bodies. If feet or ankles start to hurt or there are other uncomfortable symptoms, contact our Upper West Side office promptly by calling: (212) 877-1002 to get them evaluated.
