Make Good Footwear Choices

Turns out that admonition of countless parents to their children, “make good choices,” is also applicable when it comes to your shoes. At Goldsmith Podiatry, we see many foot and ankle problems that can be traced back to improper footwear. Conversely, wearing good quality shoes that are supportive and fit properly can help prevent foot pain and several common disorders. Below are a few suggestions for how to improve your footwear selections.

Choose short-heeled shoes instead of ballet flats. Many patients mistakenly think that flats are the best and most comfortable shoe for your feet. Flat shoes lack arch support, and this can lead to heel pain and plantar fasciitis. A short heel will put your foot in a healthier position and also reduce strain on your Achilles tendon.

Choose square toe boots instead of traditional cowboy boots. Any shoe that has a narrow or pointy toe box will lead to foot trouble. When toes are squeezed together in a cramped toe box ingrown toenails, neuromas, bunions and other deformities are likely to develop. Hip, square-toed styles offer toes plenty of wiggle room and also allow for greater breathability, creating an environment less likely to breed fungal infections.

Choose loafers instead of sock sneakers.  If you’re looking for a style that’s a step up from sneakers but nearly as comfortable, try a loafer. Although sock sneakers may appear cushy and cozy, the knit upper does nothing to hold your foot in proper position. The minimal structure allows too much lateral movement which increases the chance of an ankle sprain. Loafers support your entire foot and also offer a better sole for absorbing shock which will result in less foot pain and fatigue.

Choose a chunky heel ankle boot instead of stiletto heeled short boots. Stiletto heels harm your feet. High heels force your foot forward, putting excessive pressure on the balls of your feet and your toes. In addition, the skinny heel is highly unstable and a particularly bad idea in winter weather.

If you have flat feet, hammertoes, or another chronic podiatric condition, talk to our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith and Dr. Rosanna Troia about the best shoe choices for your condition. In some cases, the foot doctor may recommend a custom orthotic device to help position your foot correctly and relieve pain.
