Pediatric Foot Health: A Firm Foundation for Kids

Ensuring the well-being of our youngest patients often requires more than routine check-ups. At Goldsmith Podiatry, we find that even the most conscientious parents sometimes overlook a foundational concern when it comes to pediatric healthcare: Their child’s feet!

In this blog post, we’re going to dig into some common children’s foot health issues. We’ll examine the characteristics of each problem, and then we’ll provide insights regarding treatment and management. For helpful hints, take a look below. We’ll keep your sure-footed kids on the go!

Pediatric Flat Feet

  • Flat feet are frequently an ongoing issue for children, especially younger ones.

  • While many children naturally have flat arches, persistent flatness may require attention.

  • Incorporating exercises that strengthen foot muscles and selecting supportive footwear can contribute to healthy arch development.

Sever's Disease

  • Also called calcaneal apophysitis, Sever’s is a growth plate disorder common in active children.

  • Symptoms include heel pain and tenderness.

  • We recommend a combination of rest, orthotic insoles, and gentle stretching exercises to manage and prevent recurrence.

In-Toeing and Out-Toeing

  • Walking with toes turned inward (in-toeing) or outward (out-toeing) is a common concern.

  • Many children naturally outgrow these gait patterns, yet persistent issues may require professional evaluation.

  • Implementing an exercise routine and ensuring properly fitting shoes can aid natural alignment.

Plantar Warts

  • Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), plantar warts can appear on the soles of children's feet and grow inward, making them surprisingly difficult to get rid of for good.

  • Encourage proper hygiene and make sure your kids avoid barefoot walking in public areas.

  • Consult with a podiatrist for safe and effective wart removal methods, and do so promptly, or the warts might spread and multiply.
