4 Winter Foot Health Risks

Winter is on its way to Manhattan and we at Goldsmith Podiatry want our patients to be prepared for the unique issues feet have to face at this time of the year. Below are four common foot problems to be on guard for:

  1. Frostbite—if you enjoy winter sports such as skiing, ice skating, or other activities that involve being out in cold temperatures for extended periods, you’ll want to take precautions to prevent frostbite. Pay attention to how your feet feel while you’re outside. If you experience any pain, burning, or numbness, it’s essential to get inside where it’s warmer quickly. You also need to ensure that your feet stay dry. Waterproof footwear and a double layer of socks will help. For the socks closest to your skin choose a moisture-wicking material that will take perspiration away from the skin.

  2. Ankle Sprains—slippery sidewalks, curbs obscured by snow, and high-heeled holiday footwear can all be the cause of an ankle twisting injury. It’s important to choose boots and shoes that are appropriate for the weather—even if it’s only a short walk to your destination. It’s better to pack your dress shoes and change when you arrive than sit out the whole party at the emergency room!

  3. Fungal Infections—although many people associate foot infections with summertime, there’s a risk during winter as well. Locker rooms and showers at indoor fitness centers are hotbeds for fungal and bacterial infections, easily transmitted if you walk barefoot. Be alert to sanitizing practices at the salon as well when dressing up your toes with a pedicure.

  4. Dry Skin—it’s inevitable—once the heat is on, our skin gets drier. For most people, dry skin on the feet is more of an itchy annoyance than a medical threat, but if you have diabetes or are immune compromised, it’s a bigger concern. Dry skin can become cracked and allow bacteria to enter which can lead to an infection that’s difficult to heal. It’s a good idea for everyone to moisturize their feet at night before going to bed.
