As another heatwave looms, we at Goldsmith Podiatry know many of our Manhattan patients will be looking to cool off in pools, lakes, and at the beach. August is Summer Sun Safety Month, and we’d like to encourage patients to remember to protect the skin on their feet and the rest of their bodies. Below are some tips to help.

Sunscreen Savvy

Most people know they should use sunscreen, but they don’t always maximize its benefits. A few pointers:

  • Choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

  • Look for an SPF of 30 or higher.

  • Check the expiration date—expired sunscreen will not be as effective.

  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or any activity that causes you to perspire heavily.

  • Use water-resistant sunscreen for beach and pool days.

Something Shady

Even when used properly, sunscreen can’t block all the UV rays. Limit your time in the sun during the hottest hours of the day. A quick test to tell how intense the sun’s rays are is to look at your shadow. If it’s shorter than you are, that means the sun is at its hottest. Look for opportunities to get out of the sun for a while, such as a covered porch, awning, or a large, shady tree.

Cover Up

You can increase your sun protection by wearing long sleeves and pants or clothing with SPF in the fabric. A wide-brimmed hat can also help keep the sun off your face, shoulders, and chest.

Be vigilant about checking the skin on your feet for any new moles, freckles, or spots. If you notice changes in color, size, texture, or shape of an existing spot it’s important to let our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith and Dr. Rosanna Troia know as these can be signs of cancer developing. Contact our Upper West Side office by calling 212-877-1002 for an appointment.
