Thanksgiving is a Time to Be Grateful for Your Feet

It’s the time of year when we take a moment to stop and remember all the many blessings we are thankful for. At Goldsmith Podiatry, we want to be sure our Manhattan patients include their feet on that list. Although often taken for granted, your feet are amazing. Consider the following facts about your feet:

You know that your feet get you where you want to go every day, but have you ever stopped to think about how many miles you’ve walked in your lifetime? The average person will walk approximately 115,000 miles! That’s the equivalent of circling the globe four times. Women walk on average 3 miles a day more than men.

  • There are 250,000 sweat glands in your feet capable of secreting about ½ pint of perspiration daily—a good reason to keep an extra pair of socks in your bag or desk to change into in case you notice your feet feel damp.

  • The number one way to protect the health of your feet is by wearing shoes that fit correctly. And, by the way, it’s not unusual for one foot to be larger than the other. Always buy shoes to accommodate the bigger foot.

  • More than 25% of all the bones in your body are in your feet. More milk anyone to help keep those bones strong.

  • Your feet act as an early warning system for the rest of your body. Several systemic diseases may first show symptoms in your feet, including diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, nerve disorders, and kidney problems.

  • When you run, your feet take the pressure of up to four times your body weight.

Now that you know how great your feet are, it makes you want to show your appreciation by taking even better care of them, doesn’t it? One way you can do this is by listening to your feet and not ignoring foot pain. If you are experiencing foot or ankle discomfort, contact our Upper West Side office by calling 212-877-1002 and letting our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith, Dr. Rosanna Troia, and Dr. Kristina Ruff evaluate your feet.

Wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to your family from ours!
