International Podiatry Day 2021: Join the Celebration!

At Goldsmith Podiatry, we’re committed to helping all of our Manhattan patients have better foot health. October 8th is International Podiatry Day and a great time to talk about the many ways to be proactive in caring for your feet. Your efforts can help you live an active life free of foot pain and help you take better care of your body overall. Your feet can alert you to medical problems in the rest of your body. Commit to better foot care by pledging to follow some or all of the foot-friendly suggestions below.

I pledge to:

  • Not wear socks for more than one day.

  • Wash my feet every day with soap and water.

  • Schedule regular podiatric exams if I have diabetes or another chronic problem that can harm my feet.

  • Avoid going barefoot at the gym, nail salon, town pool, or other public places where other people walk barefoot.

  • Get enough calcium to keep my foot bones strong by eating more dairy products, leafy green vegetables, and other sources of calcium.

  • Exercise regularly and strive for 150 active minutes each week.

  • Keep my nails appropriately trimmed to avoid ingrown toenails.

  • Apply moisturizer to the skin on my feet to prevent dryness and cracking.

  • Discard shoes with worn-down soles, compressed insoles, stretched-out heel counters, tears, or other signs of wear.

  • Not to spend time in heels high enough to hurt my feet and cramp my toes. (Okay, at least I pledge to limit my time in those types of shoes and to wear more comfortable shoes to my destination and change when I arrive.)

  • Weigh myself weekly and eat a nutritious diet to maintain a healthy weight.

  • ·Quit smoking.

  • Regularly examine my feet and report anything unusual or concerning, such as lumps, swelling, skin discoloration, bruising and slow-healing wounds, to podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith, Dr. Rosanna Troia, and Dr. Kristina Ruff to evaluate.

  • Not ignore foot pain and contact our Upper West Side office by calling 212-877-1002 so that podiatric issues can be diagnosed and treated before they cause permanent harm to my feet.
