If the Shoe Fits…Your Feet will be Healthier
Did you know your footwear is one of the most significant factors in the health of your feet? At Goldsmith Podiatry, we know many of our Manhattan patients’ foot and ankle problems can be traced, at least in part, to wearing shoes that don’t fit properly. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is to wear shoes that are the correct size and style for your feet. Below are tips on getting the best shoe fit for you.
Start by getting your feet measured by a professional. The shoe salesperson should measure both of your feet while you are standing up.
If one foot measures larger than the other (which is not unusual), buy shoes that accommodate the larger foot.
Shop for shoes at the end of the day. Your feet will be their largest after you’ve been walking on them all day.
Wear the type of socks you plan to use with the shoes you are buying. Also, if our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith and Dr. Rosanna Troia, have prescribed a custom orthotic to wear for a foot disorder. Be sure to try it on with any shoes you are considering and make sure it fits comfortably.
Make sure there’s plenty of room in the toe box. There should be about half an inch between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. That’s about the width of your thumb. You should also be able to wiggle all your toes freely.
Check for a snug heel fit. Your heel should not slip out of the back of the shoe when you are walking. The back of the shoe should not rub uncomfortably on your skin either.
Run your hand around the inside of the shoe to check for any loose stitching or rough patches that may cause a blister. This is particularly important if you have diabetes.
Try on both shoes and take your time walking around the store to make sure they feel comfortable. New shoes should feel comfortable from the time you leave the store. A “breaking in period” is a myth!
