At Goldsmith Podiatry, we always strive to find conservative measures to treat foot and ankle problems. An excellent tool that can help with many podiatric conditions is custom orthotics. Orthotics are inserts that you wear inside your shoes to help correct a foot problem or decrease pain and discomfort. Orthotics fall into two basic categories:

Functional Orthotics

Many foot and ankle problems are caused by a biomechanical defect that results in abnormal motion of the foot, which leads to pain and discomfort. Plantar fasciitisbunions, and chronic ankle sprains are some examples of conditions that can be treated with functional orthotics. This type of orthotics is usually made of a semi-rigid material such as graphite or plastic and their goal is to redirect the movement of the foot to help relieve the pressure or movement that is causing the problem.

Accommodative Orthotics

When a part of your foot is hurting, often as a result of an ongoing or chronic ailment, accommodative orthotics may be recommended. The job of these orthotics is to provide padding, cushioning and support. Diabetic foot ulcers and calluses are two examples of conditions that might be relieved through the use of accommodative orthotics. These are usually made of soft material.

Why Orthotics Work

Research has shown that custom-made orthotics improve foot function and decrease pain. Part of the reason for this is that custom orthotics are designed to work for your individual foot. Orthotics are made from physical or digital molds of your actual feet. They match the contours of your feet precisely and are crafted to accommodate your unique foot structure and pathology after our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith or Dr. Rosanna Troia,  have evaluated your feet, ankles, and legs.
