5 Ways to Celebrate International Podiatry Day

Each year, on October 8th, we recognize International Podiatry Day. Goldsmith Podiatry is joining podiatrists around the world to improve foot health care. We educate our Manhattan patients on caring for their feet and ankles better and preventing podiatric problems.

Here are 5 Steps to Improve Your Foot Care.

  1. Find your foot care regimen: Primary foot care needn’t be complicated, but it should be consistent. Start by washing your feet daily with soap and water and drying them thoroughly. Always wear clean socks, and if your feet tend to sweat excessively, apply a foot or anti-fungal powder first. End the day massaging an emollient moisturizer on your feet when you climb in bed to keep foot skin supple.

  2. Kick the high-heel habit: Shoes with heels over 2 inches force your feet into an unnatural position and can be the source of many foot disorders, from ingrown toenails to bunions to neuromas. Fortunately, there are attractive alternatives that don’t harm your feet. Treat yourself to a pair!

  3. Learn your family history: Many podiatric issues have a genetic component. Even though you can't change your genes, you can take steps to prevent a foot problem that you know you are predisposed to. Be thorough when reviewing your medical and family history with the foot doctor.

  4. Take a walk: Walking is the easiest exercise you can do. It’s low impact and easy on your joints, and the only equipment required is a good pair of sneakers or walking shoes. Regular exercise benefits your feet by keeping them flexible and improving circulation. It can also help reduce the risk of several conditions that can negatively impact your podiatric health, including diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, and peripheral arterial disease.

  5. Schedule a checkup with the podiatrist: If you have a chronic foot problem such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, or diabetes, regular appointments with the podiatrist should be part of your treatment plan. It’s also best not to procrastinate getting new foot and ankle pain or other unusual symptoms evaluated by our podiatrists, Dr. Howard Goldsmith, Dr. Rosanna Troia, and Dr. Kristina Ruff. But, even if all seems well with your feet and ankles, a periodic podiatric checkup can help you head off future foot problems and learn additional ways to take good care of your feet.
