3 Causes of Ankle Pain You May be Missing
The ankle is a complex structure with 11 ligaments, 7 bones, and numerous muscles, nerves, and tendons. At Goldsmith Podiatry, we know when one of our Manhattan patients comes to us complaining of ankle pain and discomfort, there are many potential sources of these symptoms. Below are some causes of ankle pain that patients may overlook.
Unresolved Sprains—Did you know that as many as 80% of untreated ankle sprains result in lingering symptoms, including chronic pain, stiffness, and instability? An ankle sprain causes damage to the ligaments and may also involve bruised cartilage or a fracture. Too often, when patients do seek treatment for a sprain, they discontinue physical therapy and exercises necessary for strengthening the surrounding muscles too early. The healing isn’t over when the pain goes away. Sprains not fully rehabilitated can cause long-term discomfort and repeated sprains.
Os Trigonum Syndrome—This congenital condition results in an extra bone developing behind the ankle bone. It is not extremely common, and many patients don’t even realize they have an os trigonum until it causes a problem. Symptoms of the syndrome include deep, aching pain in the back of the ankle, which is especially noticeable when pointing the toe downward or pushing off with the big toe. Swelling at the back of the ankle and tenderness are also potential signs. Os trigonum syndrome is particularly prevalent in ballet dancers, soccer players, and other athletes. It can also develop after an ankle sprain or further injury.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome—The posterior tibial nerve is the source of pain in tarsal tunnel syndrome. This nerve housed in the tarsal tunnel, when compressed, can cause shooting pain, numbness, or a burning, tingling sensation like an electrical shock. Tarsal tunnel syndrome is comparable to carpal tunnel syndrome only in your ankle. It can be caused by a biomechanical problem in the foot, an injury, or by certain diseases.
As you can see, tracking down the source of ankle pain can be a complex process. Suppose you’re experiencing any discomfort in this area.
